April Flowers

Daffodils, hyacinths, lamb’s ears & sweet william

This is one garden of several that I planted around a group of locust trees. It makes mowing the lawn a lot easier because we can give the trees a wider berth. This one has a mixture of daffodils, hyacinth, lamb’s ears and sweet william. I just love sweet william. It spreads like a ground cover and yields brilliant pink and red color through in the month of May.

It’s Weird Object Friday!

Cuddles the friendly spore

Not to be out done by his sister, my son Ben has requested that this week’s weird object Friday post demonstrate his amazing skill as an artist.   Yes, this is Cuddles the friendly spore.  How old was my highly skilled child when he created this masterpiece, you ask?   He was in high school!

Naturalizing is a style of gardening where bulbs are planted to appear uncultivated.   The family that owned our house before us started this process and through the years I have tried to continue it.   The following photos show the different varieties that are in my yard.   Tulips are another flower that come from a bulb and are used in naturalizing.   I have never had any luck with tulips because deer like to eat the flowers & leaves.   They leave the daffodils alone because they are poisonous.

blending in

Megan thought this picture of Pigeon should have been entitled “kittyflage”.   She really does blend well into her surroundings.

It’s Weird object Friday

Megan and her fountain

When Megan was in fifth grade, she attended her very first ceramics class.   It was held at the Fairmount Center for the Arts, which is where I now work.  After that first class she was hooked, and continued her lessons there until she graduated high school and began her college career at the Cleveland Institute of Art.   One of her first projects was to make a real working fountain.  Chris bought a motor for it, and when it was finished, it really did work.   Not bad for a beginner!
