Columbine and Purple Wood Hyacinth

West Side Garden

I wrote this before the california trip, and forgot to post it. So if you are scratching your head because we have past the columbine and wood hyacinth season, you are correct!

My pale yellow double columbine is blooming right now in my garden that faces west. This wildflower attracts hummingbirds and bees because its flowers are loaded with nectar. The names columbine means dove-like, and its folk name is granny’s bonnet. If I can remember to dead head the flowers as they die, my columbine will continue to bloom through june.

The purple flower in the back is a wood hyacinth. I have several patches of these as they lend well to naturalization. They also attract butterflies and they have the added benefit of being rabbit, deer and squirrel resistant.

Here is a photo of one of my patches of naturalized wood hyacinth.

Just one more.

  1. That is so intresting that you told what the name Columbine means. Just the other day my daughter saw some and asked me what it was. She was surprised when I told her it was Columbine. She only associates the name with the Columbine school shooting some years ago. Now I can tell her what the true meaning of Columbine is.

  3. I actually planted mixed columbine seeds a few years back and this is the only color that grew and bloomed.
