Vegetables and Day Lillies

My vegetable garden resides right next to a patch of orange day lillies, in my front yard.  You can see them peeking through, behind the corn.

Late last Spring, I bought a packet of seeds that contained indian corn, beans and squash. It was called The Native American Three Sisters Garden. The Idea is that these three plants complement each other and are beneficial to each other in the garden.

Do you see how the squash vine has wrapped itself around the corn stalk?

I’ll let you know how well it works.

Accidental Planting

A few years ago, I had a section of overgrown Vinca vine in one of my gardens that I didn’t want.   So I yanked it up and dumped it by the edge of woods.

I never realized that it would take root, thrive and actually look pretty.

Weird plant Friday

This is a very rare perrenial that is growing in my garden.   Pigeonifureous Weirdeous, commonly know as “pigeon with pants” will grow nicely if you water and feed it often.

A Hummingbird has discovered my phlox

Phlox is a Greek word that means flame.

Butterflies, bumblebees and hummingbirds all love Phlox.

They are a sweet smelling, old fashioned perennial and one of my favorite summer time flowers.

But not to be confused with Dr Phlox!

LOOK WHAT I WON!

Margaret has bestowed upon me a blogging award that originates from Uruguay known as Arte y Pico.
I now need to pick 5 deserving blogs to give this award to, but I will only be giving this out to my dad because all the other noteworthy blogs I visit have already won!

So, I shall give this award to my father . My dad will be 89 years old in November and I think it is quite impressive that he is blogging.   Though I do think he could use a few more visitors to his web site.   My dad is civically minded, and most of his entries are political in nature.

Here is what is written about this award on Margaret’s web site: “Here are the rules for the Arte y Pico award:
1) pick five (5) blogs that you consider deserve this award for their creativity, design, interesting material, and also for contributing to the blogging community, no matter what language.2) each award has to have the name of the author and also a link to his or her blog to be visited by everyone.3) each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her or him the award itself.4) award-winner and the one who has given the prize have to show the link of “Arte y Pico” blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award which is here: Arte y Pico.”

Red Cinquefoil

This is another perennial that I picked up on that trip to Bluestone Perennials with my sister, Rosemary.

Cinquefoil is French for five fingers, which refers to the five lobes on each leaf.   It also bears the Latin name of Potentilla which means”little powerful one.”  The variety I have is called monarch’s velvet.

This perennial blooms all summer long and attracts bees.

This wild flower is another great choice for placement in naturalized gardens.

Weird Statue Friday

I posted this picture a couple years ago on my old blog.   Chris is pretending to be the Statue of Liberty and Rikki is his torch.   I don’t think I’ll run of of these weird friday posts any time soon because my family is so weird…

OH DEER!

Two days ago, I had six beautiful broccoli plants.   As of yesterday, I only have one left.   I have noticed a deer or two in my yard lately.   I’m thinking there is a connection here.   My mother-in law advises me to put hot sauce on cotten balls, put the cotton balls on sticks and place them around my remaining plant.   Apparently, deer do not like their broccoli hot and spicey.
