Downys (Downies?) are sort of common around these parts, I think - we get a couple of them at the feeder routinely, and I love it when they show up. Now look out for a red bellied one - notable because of their red...head, actually. And Jessica can help set you straight - she knows her birds!

Hi Pigeon.... What you have is a Female Downy Woodpecker. Ladder Backs have no white on their backs and they are only found in the southwest US and Mexico. Good guess, they look a lot alike. Hairy Woodpeckers also look like Downy's but they are a little bigger and their beaks are longer. I'm so excited that you are becoming more interested in birding. Once you start you get more and more hooked. Before long you will be learning so much. I only became hooked in the last year and I am so surprised at all I've learned in a short time. Do you have a simple field guide with good photos? I've learned the most just from reading them. Have fun and let me know if there is anything I can help you with. It a great hobby!!!
