Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

I took this top photo in 2007 with my old camera.   That camera was still relatively new to me and I hadn’t figured out that it even had a modest zoom lens.

I took these next two photos with my new camera, from inside my house.   This Pileated woodpecker and his mate live in the woods that borders our Road.

Pileated woodpeckers are some of the biggest woodpeckers in North America.   They make rectangular shaped holes in trees, looking for ants to eat.

  1. Nice shot of the pileated - I love those guys. I watched a pileated totally demolish an old dead tree in a few short days several years ago. They mean business! Looks like the new camera is doin’ the job!

  2. I remember seeing these at my grandmother’s house on the Eastern shore of Maryland. Man, they’re loud when they start peckin’ !

  4. We have those here too. I don’t get to see them often, so it’s a nice surprise when I do.

  5. Your zoom feature is doing a good job!
    Pretty bird.
I hear woodpeckers all the time in my yard, but I rarely see them.

  6. Wow… I am so envious of your Pilealted! They are my absolute favorite bird. I have only seen them twice in my life, both times while we were vacationing in northern Michigan. They are around in lower Michigan too but I haven’t been lucky enough to witness them down here… I’m keeping my eyes open though! I’ve seen a lot of photos of them at suet feeders. You should try to entice them to your yard with a suet feeder. Good luck! And keep posting more photos of them for us to see.
