Puffy Cardinal

I took this photo during a snow storm.   I’ve noticed that when the weather turns bad, the birds tend to puff themselves up.

  1. You must have some kind of great camera to get such a great close up shot. He looks like a red tennis ball with a beak and two wings thrown in for good measure.

  2. Beautiful picture, Pigeon.. That Cardinal is really puffing up to keep warm. I wonder how they make it out there in the winter…

Thanks for the comment about your camera. Mine only has a 5x zoom–and loses the quality when it zooms. George’s zooms to 45x… I will check out your camera on Amazon. Thanks so much. I wanted to email you but don’t have your email!!!! Sigh!

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  3. Susie, My camera has a 15x zoom, but my trick is that I place bird food on my front porch, very close to my front picture window, and I take the pictures from inside my house, about three feet away from the birds. That cardinal was sitting on a burning bush, which backs up against my front porch.

  4. I seem to end up looking like that at the end of winter myself.

  5. In response to your question on my blog:

    I use nutmeg in:

    Vanilla yogurt
Nutmeg Streusel Muffins (very good — google the recipe — it’s the one with buttermilk)
Tea (just plain black tea with a sprinkle of nutmeg)
Sprinkled on applesauce with a teeny bit of turbinado sugar for “pretty”
Sprinkled on buttered toast with a bit of cinnamon and sugar
In coffee —- put it in with the grounds prior to brewing

And, of course, in pie (pumpkin, apple, peach …. or on pear custard bars)

Yes, I do sort of have a “thing” for nutmeg.

  7. I guess puffing up makes for some good insulation. You could substitute the words on that picture with the words “Merry Christmas” and have a great card!
